All About the Baguette
In recent years, we have seen a resurgence of several iconic bags, including the Dior Saddle Bag, Louis Vuitton Pouchette, and, above all, the Fendi Baguette. Made popular by SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw in the 90s, the Fendi Baguette has long been sought after due to its rarity and intricate designs. So without further ado, let’s dive into the rise and legacy of this iconic piece.
A Brief History of the Fendi Baguette
The Fendi Baguette was first designed in 1997 by Silvia Venturini Fendi, the daughter of Anna Fendi. The baguette was released in various styles, patterns, and colorways, many of which had never been seen before. These include glittery, embroidered, vinyl, beaded, sequin, and even seashell styles. At the time of its launch, the price of one of these baguettes ranged from $750-$1,000, depending on the style. Now, an authentic Fendi Baguette goes for $500-$26,000! Styles such as monogram and solid colors were on the lower end of the price range, while the more festive ones were on the higher end. As I mentioned earlier, the baguette is now considered a rare item, and you’re probably wondering why. The answer is complicated. While certain styles are not inherently rare, others are due to their design. All baguettes are NOT created equally, haha. Many of the beaded, sequin, and seashell baguettes are rare because there weren’t as many produced as the simpler designs.Â
Nowadays, coming across one of these beautiful bags for sale online and in thrift stores (especially for a decent price) is rare! This past summer, I stumbled across a white monogram baguette with silver hardware on eBay, but unfortunately, somebody snagged it before me. Anyways, this brings me to my next thing, which is where exactly you can find these baguettes, whether they’re rare or not. In my expert opinion, haha, the best places to look for Y2K fashion and vintage fashion in general (yes, they’re different) are online marketplaces. The best places to look are eBay, particularly from sellers located in Japan, Vestiaire Collection, and Grailed. These are some of my favorite places to shop for vintage accessories for several reasons, including authenticity, variety, and prices.Â
Now, let’s talk about why everybody is dying to get their hands on one of these baguettes today. It’s no secret that we’re living in a time where young people are easily influenced, and honestly, that’s usually how it goes in the fashion world. Fendi Baguettes have been spotted on lots of celebrities and influencers, including Kim Kardashian, Leah Kateb, and Gigi Hadid. Fendi has also released different variations of the baguette, like smaller sizes. There have also been several notable collabs, like the one with Tiffany and Co.
So whether you love it for the 90s style or just want to channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw, the Fendi Baguette has definitely earned its spot as one of the most iconic handbags of all time. It’s rare, unique, and it’s back like it never left. What bag do you think will come back in style next? Leave a comment down below!
